SHEENA WEST RACING

WELCOME TO SHEENA'S WEBSITE!

2012 - A GREAT TIME TO JOIN A WINNING YARD....

The 2011/2012 seasons have been a record year for Sheena, both, on the flat and over the sticks, her best season yet since taking out her trainers licence. You only have to look at the stats.

2011 Flat season – over 52% of her 48 runners in the winners enclosure, with 8 wins, 8 seconds, 6 thirds and 3 fourths, with a £34.00 profit on £1 stake.

2011/012 Jumps season – over 63% of runners in the winners enclosure, with 13 wins, 11 seconds, 8 thirds and 3 fourths, with a £52.13 profit on £1 stake.

With new horses, more new stables and Sheena's success set to continue, there has not been a better time to join this successful yard.

Who is Sheena West?

The early days.....

Sheena West trains in Lewes in West Sussex. She is a relatively small trainer who consistantly produces very good results from the horses in her care. Sheena is gifted at being able to find the right races to fit each of her horses very often resulting in them winning, which, at the end of the day, is what most owners dream of. Sheena has spent her whole life around animals and has worked hard to become a force to be reckoned with amongst the trainers in her own geographicial area - and the UK! Her hard work has certainly paid off.

You only have to check the Jumps Season Stats for the 2008-2009 season to see that her finishing strike rate was an amazing 19%! That was 9 winners out of 47 runs. She was also 96th in the prize money league table, now bearing in mind she wasn't always running in the biggest races (ie lower prize money) that wasn't a bad finishing place out of the 518 total trainers listed.

For those betting people that like stats, for a £1 stake on each of her horses running in the National Hunt season you would have grossed a profit of +72.10. That is an amazing accomplishment for a trainer who only has about 12 national hunt horses in training. She beat most of the top trainers with this stat hands down. Even to get a plus figure at the end of the season is what a trainer dreams of let alone a plus £72.10!

To put it into context her strike rate of 19% was above that of Alan King, Phillip Hobbs, David Pipe and Jonjo O'Neill - amongst many others!

Let's hope the 2011-2012 season is just as successful for Sheena and her team. It certainly won't be for the lack of trying.

Sheena West is a real country girl at heart. She was born and brought up in her families livestock farm working with the sheep and the calves. She was evidently an awesome dairy maid!

Sheena attended a lot of the local markets so learnt how to get an idea of "value" from a very early age. This early introduction she feels helps her in todays environment when she is looking to purchase racehorses. She spends a lot of time on her research when looking for the right horse which has value.

As a child, Sheena owned ponies and horses and did a fair bit of showjumping. Her father, Gerald, a talented showjumper and point to poiunt jockey was also founder member of Hickstead and owned, what was generally thought of as the best novice showjumper in England. He eventually sold the horse to the Australian Showjumping Team!

Sheena represented the Southdown East Pony Club in eventing and reached the National Finals held at Stoneleigh. This is the same pony club that the famous brothers, Ryan and Jamie Moore also belonged to.... a few years later than Sheena.

Gerald, owned point to pointers with Roy and Barbara Trigg and rode very successfully as an amateur rider and rode Woodland Venture before he went on to win The Gold Cup!

Sheena always wanted to race ride and despite her father's very best efforts to put her off (which worked successfully until she was 21!) she eventually rode her mare in a Member's race - and won! This mare she had owned, trained and rode. A great start and possibly one of the main factors that helped her decide that she wanted to hold a public trainers licence one day.

After a few broken bones and a failed marriage Sheena decided to give up race riding and got a "proper" job and worked for a company called Erricson's in their Accounts Department!

Sheena then met the father of her daughter, Megan, and returned to the family home and managed to run a relatively unsuccessful yard. It was probably during this time that she learnt what NOT to do with a racing yard in terms of training the horses, man management and personnel skills!

After Sheena and Megan's father went their separate ways, Sheena decided to keep the yard going on her own. She was left with 6 horses and no owners but she was determined to make a go of it, especially as amongst the 6 horses remaining were BARRANTES, IT'S WALLACE, GLENWARGEN AND CELTIC VENTURE.

It's Wallace gave the owners a great day out when it was runner up to Barracouda in The Stayers Hurdle at Sandown. In fact, Sheena's last ride in public was on It's Wallace in The Newmarket Town Place. She won!

It's Wallace Jnr was then a 2 year old and Last One Standing's mother was a 3 year old at the time.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Lady in red......

And where Sheena West is now.....

Sheena has always set her sights high when training her horses and she has attracted some very loyal owners. She continues to make sure they owners have a good time with their horses and continues relentlessly to purchase her value horses. Once these horses are in Sheena's care she spends alot of time learning all about them, and working out the right races she feels her horses can win.

Sheena was known as "Dimmock" by many of her peers as she has the most amazing red hair which many compared to Charlie Dimmock. Her daughter, Megan has also inherited the gorgeous flowing locks and it is always great to see Megan with her Mum at the races.

Megan rides out at home, and has a horse of her own that she looks after.

A real family affair that makes for a happy environment for the horses and the results certainly speak for themselves!

Having a horse in training with Sheena will ensure you some great days out with regular contact from Sheena on how your horse is progressing at home and discussing the race plans.

Owners are always welcome at the yard to see their horses where they will always receive a warm welcome.

Sheena West is certainly not afraid of hard work, riding out in the mornings, looking after the race planning, the running of the yard and then going racing with the owners when they have a runner.

Sheena and her team are totally focused on the well being of the racehorses entrusted into their care and when they arrive at the racecourse you will know that will be fit and well and ready to do their best.

If you feel that Sheena could be the trainer for you, please feel free to either phone or e-mail her at any time.

These are exciting times for Sheena and her staff and there are a few ideas in the offing to make owning a horse with Sheena an enjoyable experience.

If you would like to talk to Sheena about a horse you may like her to train for you or to discuss what horses she currently has for sale (whole or shares) please do not hesitate to contact her.
