Breaking News09:47 SPORT: Ascot set to be next for Golan
18/11/2008
Golan Way could try to maintain his unbeaten record over hurdles at Ascot next month.
Sheena Wests stable star may reappear in the Grade Two Mitie Kennel Gate Novices Hurdle on December 19 after making it four out of four with a game all-the-way success at Cheltenham on Friday.
There isnt much choice for him. Hes won too many races now for those novice races. On the basis of that, weve been looking at the Kennel Gate at Ascot, said the Lewes trainer.
Its a front-runners track, but we wouldnt want the ground to be too heavy for him and youd hope it wouldnt be.
Other than that you are looking at the Tolworth at Sandown in January and that usually comes up bottomless.
West hopes Golan Way will return to Cheltenham in the spring for the Supreme Novices Hurdle, for which he is a top-priced 25-1.
To go back there is the plan, she added.

Cheltenham G2 win for Golan Way
14th November 2008
Golan Way (4g Golan-Silk Daisy, by Barathea) made it four wins from as many runs over hurdles at Cheltenham on Friday when running out a deeply impressive winner of the G2 Sharp Novices Hurdle.
Sheena Wests stable star was quoted at 16/1 by Ladbrokes for the Supreme Novices Hurdle back at the Cheltenham Festival in March and the son of Golan looks to have an exciting season ahead of him.
The four-year-old - who was bred in Wales by Lewis Caterers - was having his first start since June as he finished a length and a quarter clear of Over Sixty in the G2 contest under jockey Jamie Goldstein.
"I'm very, very lucky to have him," said West. "Jamie said he blew up coming down the hill and he actually needed the race. If he needed the race, bring on March and the Supreme Novices Hurdle!
"We knew that, as long as he was fit enough, he didn't want to let anything past him. He doesn't like other horses coming past him at home and nothing has ever been good enough to get that close to him before. We knew he would keep battling if they came at him, his attitude is so good.
"He's totally got the right attitude for Cheltenham. The plan was to run him here, see what he thought of Cheltenham and the trip, and then we would decide whether we aim for March or take a different route with him. We found something out today anyway!
"I'd like to train more horses, but no one sends them to me. We've had a second and a third at Cheltenham and this is our first winner at the track. You can't buy the feeling - it's our biggest winner to date.
"I've made no plans, because it seemed a bit presumptuous to think about having a Cheltenham winner, but obviously we've got to be looking at the Supreme Novices' now.
"He cost 13,000gns at the Doncaster Sales. What attracted me to him was that he was by Golan out of a Barathea mare, and they were two of my favourite horses. That was the first attraction, his form was good enough to go hurdling, and when I saw him I fell in love. Two days after we got him home we knew he was very good. We gave him a couple of canters and that said it all, but you can tell a Rolls Royce from a Mini."
Goldstein added: "Flat racing didn't suit him, but just like his dad Golan, he tries so hard. I thought the ground might find him out, but he rallied off the bend. They were kind to me today and left me alone in front, which enabled me to get a couple of breathers into him. That said, he is improving."
SOME INTERESTING FACTS
1) Out of the 3 runners at The Paddy Power Meeting this weekend, Sheena's girls managed to win two best turned out prizes!
2) Sheena's current strike rate as of Sunday 16th November 2008 is: 8 wins out of 33 runs = 24%
3) If you had backed all of Sheena's runners to an even £1 stake you would be in profit by a massive + £83.60
4) Sheena is currently sitting about 35th in the British Jump Trainers Championship - and with only 12 horses in training that is no mean feat.
She is currently sitting in front of the Mullins, Monteith, Noel Chance, Tony Carroll, Paul Webber and some other very well known, successful trainers. OK, there is a long way to go yet, but it's still nice to to see Sheena's name in the top 35 NH trainers at the moment.

Tobago Bay, who finished third to Simarian over this course and distance last time, made much of the running, but a bad mistake at the fourth eventually took its toll. This ground was probably softer than he would have liked but he is not going to be an easy horse to place in the coming months.

Golan leads all the way
Golan Way put up gutsy performance to take his unbeaten run to four in the Grade Two Sharp Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham.
Sheena West's four-year-old (8-1) made all the running in the hands of Jamie Goldstein and shrugged aside American Trilogy after the favourite looked to have his measure at the final flight.
Over Sixty put in a spirited effort on the run-in, but Golan Way would not be denied and went on to win by a length and a quarter, with American Trilogy the same distance away in third.
Goldstein said: "He's a battler. He's just like his dad, Golan, he tries so hard.
"I thought the ground might just get him and when he came off the bottom bend he wanted that bit of company. He's given me a super ride.
"I tried to hold him - I really struggle at home. He wants quick ground, but he didn't have that. They were kind and left me alone, so I was able to get a couple of breathers into him. He just keeps improving."
West added: "We knew he would keep going - nothing has got past him yet. He had every right to be here and was three from three before this. He was as good as any of them.
"We came here on a bit of a fact-finding mission and we will have to start thinking about coming back for the Festival now."
A fantastic day for Sheena, Jamie Goldstein (great ride, Jamie!) Golan Way, WRB Racing and all the staff at the Lewes stables!

My Notes Analysis Comments In Running
One of the best novice hurdles run so far this season, but probably not as strong as last season's edition in which I'msingingtheblues beat Snap Tie.
GOLAN WAY completed a hat-trick in ordinary company early in the summer and made it four from four over hurdles on this return from a five-month break. Racing keenly, he set off in front as usual and had established a clear lead at the second before allowing the pack to close down the far side. American Trilogy looked a big threat on the home turn but he fought him off before gamely holding the runner-up. He has some way to go before he can be considered a Supreme Novices' contender, but his slick jumping and willing attitude should bring him further success.
Over Sixty was an impressive winner of a mares' race at Southwell on her hurdles debut and she handled this big rise in grade well. She was slightly outpaced by the leading pair going to the home turn but stayed on willingly up the hill to divide them and earn some valuable black type. A nice prize should come her way this term.
A GREAT CHRISTMAS PRESENT FOR ANY RACEHORSE LOVER!

LAST ONE STANDING
One of the most talented horses in Sheena's yard is now up for sale. Sheena would prefer to sell the horse privately to stay in the yard as she has high hopes for him.
There is every chance, given Last One's Standing's current form and on the work that he is showing at home, that he will be heading for The Cheltenham Festival in 2009. He is currently entered in the prestigious and well supported Paddy Power Meeting at Cheltenham this coming weekend.
This most be every National Hunt racehorse owner's dream. A horse racing in their colours at the most prestigious meeting of the National Hunt calender The Cheltenham Festival.
If you are interested in receiving more information about Last One Standing, please do not hesitate in contacting Sheena. You would be more than welcome to visit Sheena and Last One Standing at her yard in Lewes.

SOUTHWELL
26 September 2008
LAST ONE STANDING, whose sister finished runner-up in a couple of bumpers for the yard last year, certainly knew his job on this racecourse debut and ground it out professionally inside the final furlong. It would be a surprise were he good enough to defy a penalty and he has reportedly schooled well over hurdles.

OTHER NEWS ...........
Below some updates of some of the horses in my yard:
LADINO
Ladino was a bit disappointing at Huntingdon after his encouraging chase debut ealier. However, he did pick up a cut and subsequently missing the Sales and with the economic climate as it is - he will probably stay with me for the time being.
PRIMA FONTEYN
Very pleased with her progress. I am currently looking to run her in November at Kempton.
LAST ONE STANDING
A valiant effort under a penalty at Southwell and showed how much he needs a good galloping track. We have nothing to lose so we shall run him on Sunday at The Paddy Power Open Meeting.
He is currently for sale to stay in the yard.
IT'S WALLACE JNR
He's going pointing/hunter chasing.
GOLAN WAY
I am very pleased with him and he will be going to Cheltenham on the 14th November. We will see how he gets on and then plan the rest of the season based on the result.
APPOINTMENT
Unfortunately, the injury she picked up at Fontwell was more serious than we first thought. I am going to give her 3 months complete rest before bringing her back into training.
SPLIT THE WIND
She has been a bit disappointing at Kempton and seeims happier back at Lingfield and we will try and run her there in future.
IT'S A WIND UP
He is taking a long time to come to hand. Sometimes we just have to wait!
LUKATARA
Going well and will have his racing debut soon.
Cantering and happy!
SILBER MOND
UNAMED - STABLE NAME "Tilly"
Working well and she will find her level. She ought to be OK.
LE CHIFFRE
Unfortunately, he was injured after his career best when he was 2nd at Great Leighs. He will be off of the track for a while but we hope to get him back.
