NEWS AND UPDATES FOR AUGUST 2011-DUBAI GLORY AND DENTON RYAL BOTH WIN AGAIN!

WELL DONE, MARTIN! 3rd AT KEMPTON ON HI NOTE

Apprentice jockey, Martin Leonard

Martin, Hi Note and Megan

Apologies for the poor quality of the photo of Martin, Hi Note and Megan leading in.
Some of the regular owners from Sheena's yard will recognise her apprentice jockey in the above photo, Martin Leonard. Martin has been working at Sheena's yard for the last few months and is a valued member of the team. Last night at Kempton, Martin rode Hi Note (a mare currently for sale) and he rode an excellent race to finish a very respectable third. As this was only his 2nd race Sheena is keen to give Martin as much experience as possible as he clearly has the talent.
It was great to see another debut for the yard last night with Sheena's daughter, Megan leading up Hi Note. A real shame there was not a "best turned out" in the race as I am convinced Megan would have won as Hi Note looked an absolute picture.
A great team effort and congratulations again to Martin for listening to the bosses instructions and doing an excellent job in finishing in the frame. Had the finishing post been another few lengths away it could have been an even more exciting result!

Hi Note, whose sole success was over 1m around here, was back up in trip having run over hurdles on her previous outing. She cruised into contention but looked held 2f out before keeping on again. She might be best dropped back to 1m on this surface.

ALFRAAMSEY 2ND AT NEWTON ABBOTT

Alfraamsey very unlucky to be caught on the run in at Newton Abbott. Sheena is continuing a a good run with her horses with all of the last 8 runners bar one being either placed or winning.

DENTON RYAL WINS AGAIN! THIS TIME AT SOUTHWELL!

===========================
DENTON RYAL, unlike several of these, has been pretty consistent and ran out an easy winner. Having been held up, she had no difficulty in reeling in the leader leaving the back straight and swept past him turning in to run out an easy winner.

DUBAI GLORY WINS AGAIN AT SALISBURY AT 12/1
Many congratulations to Stan Clegg and his Affordable Partnership and all the connections. Dubai Glory continues to go from strength to strength and again today she showed what a really tough cookie she is. Another great ride by James Doyle.

===========================
DUBAI GLORY had done too much too early last time when looking a non stayer tried at 1m6f in a race run at a strong gallop, and the combination of a more patient ride back at her best trip allowed her to overcome what had previously proved a tough mark. This win, which is probably better than it looked given where the trio she tracked finished, took her C&D form figures to 131

Marc and Hayley return to the yard
Sorry I've missed a couple of months but overall it has been a bit quiet here with just puppies (all successfully now in their new homes) and a few horses in training. These have been running well though and keeping the flag flying for the yard. A lot of horses are now back in work and new stables have been ordered. It does currently look a little like a real building site as opposed to just being untidy! I've even got a really nice top of the range off roader, or it was 25 years ago so anyone can not now travel up to the gallops in absolute comfort, although the youngest in the car still has to do the gates!
The team is coming together beautifully for the new season and there are one or two new faces around the yard. Martin Leonard who has an apprentice licence after being with Barry Hills, John Dunlop and then Gary Moore and Gemma Marsh has also recently joined the team. But please, no one fret as our Hayley is still here too.
As you may have seen from the flat stats we are doing really well in that sphere, especially when I'm meant to be a jumps yard. It's not intentional per se more a reflection of the type of horse I like to buy i.e dual purpose horses.
There are some new horses in the yard and some familiar faces to tell you about.
By the way, I do wish Kathy would take down that dreadful photo of me doing silly things to the sound of Tom Jones at Sandown last week, but I have to admit that it does make me chuckle. Music nights are very popular with music people and people that like a bit of fun and they are very unpopular with people who like racing who are now really happy now they can hang their argument around Epsom's stage positioning.
A racecourse however is a business and it is lovely to see them making money in the current climate and it would be even lovelier to see a percentage of these profits being put back into racing via prize money and making a bit more of an effort to help the industry in which they work rather than just their own business.
Right, rant over and on to the horses...

She's had a lovely long holiday, and looks well for it. Shoes are back on and I am looking forward to some fun in the coming months with this nice mare.
Denton Ryal
===========
She's having a busy summer now I've finally accepted what her grade is. She's a nice sized filly with enough scope for fences and actually has an enviable record over hurdles now with 2 wins and 6 places from just 11 starts. She'll have a couple of easy weeks now before looking for another race. We do actually want to sell her but she can continue running in the meantime.

A 6 year old bay gelding by Snurge ex Southern Skies by Dr Massini.
I think I had a bang on the head here and did something I swore I would never do i.e. bought an Irish point to pointer but he just sort of fell off the back a lorry into the back of mine at the Cheltenham sales. I really didn't want him but his dreadful (in my opinion) name rang a little bell and when I said that I wasn't buying a horse that fell last time out it was duly pointed out that it was over banks at the Punchestown Festival on his 3rd ever start after winning his point first time out. Then I remembered watching the race and him in particular for his awful name and thought I remembered him running quite well up to that point. After the deed was done and I watched the replay he was going well at the time so I felt a bit happier. He is sound and genuine and he ought to make up into a nice chaser for the local tracks over the winter and with luck a cross country horse.
Golan Way
==========
He had a nice break and has been walking and trotting for a few weeks now. He finished 11th in the Anglo Irish classifications for 3m+ novice chasers last season and I feel incredibly proud of my boy. He has always needed a fair bit of work to be 100% but I've plenty of time as there isn't anything to run him in until November. Anyway, I'd preferably run him on a right handed track which leaves Wincanton or Ascot as possibilities but whatever happens he will be aimed at the King George,
Mohanad
=======
Will some people please stop being rude about him. He really is the most wonderful horse to be connected with always gives 100% in his running and tries his best under any conditions. He's been kept off of the track with an over reach but he's been able to stay in full training and came back with a good 3rd and 3 days later his second flat win at Lingfield. He seems to be improving and getting stronger all the time. He should run on the flat in the next week and then there is a valuable handicap hurdle at Newton Abott on 20th August over 2m6f. Fingers crossed he'll be able to transfer his improvement.
Dubai Glory

Well she got her hat trick up but unfortunately since then the only time things have been/gone right is at Salisbury when she was a creditable 3rd. She is so well and still looks fantastic. It would be nice for things to fall right again. She can win off her current mark but there is no room for error. Next year she will be stronger and competitive over longer trips.

A 4 year old bay gelding by Dubawi ex Belle Allemande by Royal Academy.
A half brother to a 97 rated sprinter Crown Choice. He was 2nd on his only start a Sligo bumper...... and has now found his way here after being bought at Cheltenham sales. He is such a nice horse. He is a great ride, plenty of bone and with a good attitude. I was going to rush him out quickly after I bought him but then decided he was too nice to rush out and I'd be better of giving him a little holiday and get to know him better. He's back in training now and is an out and out stayer he should make a nice hurdler and big enough to chase in time.
Whipperway
===========
Back in training and refreshed after a good holiday. She started off last season well as a juvenile and got a bit tired towards the end. A year on and we shall have a bit of fun with her now she is a bit stronger.
'Bobby'
=======
She did well the short time she was in last season and being a professional has summered exceptional well. That is a polite way of saying she looks like a butterball!
Back in training she will be aimed at Juvenile Bumpers.

Brilliant Barca

Brilliant Barca is a 3 year old bay gelding by Imperial Dancer ex Fadeaway by Fraam
I bought him from Mick Channon as Mick told me to and because he's a good type of horse with size and scope for the future. He is sound with a proven ability to win even beating our very own Dubai Glory earlier this season. He would appear to like a bit of cut in the ground and is an ideal juvenille hurdles prospect for this winter and could double his options on the AW when it snows or we get ice or floods on the turf. There is absolutely no catch, just a good opportunity if you would like to be involved in a jumper this comming season.
Moonwolf
========
Hugely frustrating and very difficult to place. He will be running in claimers before going to the sales.
Shirocco colt
=============
He's back in training and he's a diamond of a horse. He is very laid back and willing. He is popping out the stalls nicely and will be ready for back end of the season.
Ya Hafed
==========
Another who had a good holiday after being gelded and been back in training a few weeks now. He should be ready October time. I'd like to run him on the flat again as well as hurdles and another dual purpose prospect.
Geordie Boy
============
SHARES FOR SALE
He's back in training after the gelding and breaking process and a bit of time to himself and turned away with Ya Hafed. The pair of them are so soft they get picked on by the other geldings so they are turned out with the fillies and mares now in the afternoons to talk about nice things like hair and fashion and leave the rugby and beer for the other more manly boys.
He's quite a size for 2 year old, let alone a late one like him and will make up into an impressive horse in the next few months and hopefully look even more impressive winning a race or two.

A 3 year old bay gelding by Phoenix Reach ex Katy Q by Taufan
Fed up with all the talk about his prospects as a chaser whilst he was walking around the paddock at Leicester in a 3yo maiden race a few weeks back (you know who you are) Kathy thought "sod it, I'll send him to Sheena's!"
His stallion Phoenix Reach has made a promising start as a jumps sire with some moderate flat horses and "Dylan" would apear to have inherited their trait with the ability to just keep going and an apptitude for jumping. All being well he'll be aimed at Fontwell at the begining of September.
Mac Federal
===========
FOR LEASE
He's been kept on tick over all summer rather than let him down completely and have to start again. He will start cantering in September as we saw in the spring he retains his ability and there must be a race or 2 for him.
Toby
====
My daughter Megan's project. The Tobougg yearling was 4th in the yearling hack class at Kent County Show. It's all abit of fun but one thing is sure he definitely won't be fazed when he gets to the racetrack.
Mr Harmoosh
===========
Now fully over his allergy and really well now. He's a bit annoying as he has a tonne of ability and is intent on making a twit of me. He knows how to jump and race but it is all going out the window for now, but I guess he is a novice and some horses take longer than others for the penny to fully drop as it did for him also on the flat. On the plus side he might well end up with a sensible rating when it does!

Hi Note

A 3 year old filly by Acclamation ex Top Tune by Victory Note
She's recently arrived from Mick Channon's who promises me she'll be alright. Not the stoutest pedigree in the world but she has won on the flat over a mile and seems to stay a mile and 1/2. She certainly jumps and is a long way from the finished article yet and I'm very pleased with her home work. She does lack tactical speed for the flat but puts her head down and tries. I cannot ask for more than that.

A 3 year old by Fraam ex Evanesce by Lujain
Another from Mick Channon. An ex sprinter. He's a gorgeous gent of a horse and quickly showed an aptitude for jumping. He'd only been here 2 and a 1/2 weeks when he ran so well at Stratford to be 3rd and the winner has since won again. Two weeks before he came here he was beaten 5 lengths over 5 furlongs which says alot about his temperament. He'll go to Newton Abott next week.
