WELL DONE TO HEART OF THE SOUTH RACING

===========================

KASHMINA was backed at 35-1 on the exchanges in the morning but sent off at 6-1 on course. She came with a sweeping run down the centre of the track and has shown some tenacity to repel a fast finisher and get off the mark on her 20th career attempt. It is hard to find a reason for this improved display but she has looked revived back on the Flat after a spell over hurdles and could be a late-developing type capable of further progress.

A brilliant evening with Sheena West and Heart of the South Racing at Windsor this evening.

A memorable evening as it was Sheena's first winner at Windsor - and great to see so many of the owners at Windsor to watch Kashmina put in a brilliant effort under a great ride from James Doyle. Well done to Hayley, who as usual had Kashmina looking superb.

===================================================

Things pretty quite runners wise this time of the year so it's the time for painting and cleaning and tidying things in the yard. It is so rewarding as everything looks so much better and brighter for a belated spring clean - including including the girls who so much better for the new fashion of a splash of white emulsion they are sporting this year!

Now on to what the horses are up to:

Silber Mond
===========
Continues in his work but just to tick over. If he were to be turned away now he would get very fat and would ultimately put his legs under more strain. If we allowed him to return to work fat and detrained, he's doing no more than if he were a happy hacker. When everything is right to come back into full work he'll find it all easy.

Last one Standing
==================

Has had a mini break after his excellent Plumpton run and is now back in full training and will run through the summer over hurdles.

Bay Hawk
========
Lots and lots of steady cantering for Bay Hawk, the more he does of this the better, he has a preference for softer ground, which doesn't look likely for a while so there is no big rush with him. Strictly speaking the longer a horse takes to get fit the better for it in the long run, so as we have the time everything should come right for him and at the right time.

Golan Way
=========
Is now back in training after his break.

Tobago Bay
==========
He's well and ran at Bath on Sunday, he made the running as he likes too but gets a bit tapped for toe, he's not a 'fast' horse and as we feel he will get much further over hurdles than he's run over to date it should not perhaps come as a surprise that this is so. He would appear to have a very attractive handicap mark for the flat, but if we are honest with ourselves he has that mark for a reason although that's certainly not through lack of trying. Other horses deceive the same way Venetia Williams has a horse called Dansimar with a similar profile. Tobago's Bay's strengths are that he loves jumping and is very good at it and can jump accurately at a faster pace than many other horses can, hence he is a very good hurdler. A Flat race might come his way, but the aim now is for Market Rasen in July where they have a 0-150 which is now in the diary!

Saharah Sun

Place The Duchess
=================

I continue to be pleased with her progress. She's a little poppet. She will run on 13th June at Lingfield and be entered for a 6f and 7f race I will see what the races look like.

It would be nice if she can reward her owner, Jon's faith in her. It certainly won't be through lack of trying as she's been here for a while and is now very fit.

Mac Federal
===========

Just ticking over through the summer so he is ready to get into full work as soon as the ground permits.

Kashmina
========

I was delighted with her Bath run. How can a horse finish only 7th and be beaten a couple of lengths? It is so not fair. We had hoped to run her over hurdles but now feel that another run on the flat will set her up 100%.

Unfortunately, she did what horses often do and frustratingly a foot problem resulted in a week off. She's now back in full work now and I'll have a look at the programme book soon to see what is now available for her.

Itsawindup
==========

Trekked up to Ludlow. I haven't been to this track before, for those that care! A combination of a stiffish handicap mark and some rather patchy ground to say the least and a rough race resulted in 7 lbs less to carry in future handicaps. There is always a bright side if you look hard enough. He will try this new mark out in June at Worcester.

Split the Wind
==============
Has got her jumping together and ran well for a long way at Huntingdon. Out of trouble in the front she eventually finished 5th. She had a good blow after and will improve a little fitness wise. Seeing some of the other novices jumping in her race I think I worry too much sometimes! ;0)

Le Chiffre
==========

After 6 months out he has now started walking and trotting. He has been a most excellent patient convalescing as he should and not thinking he can party when no ones looking. The vets are fully confident of a full recovery and return to the racetrack.

As he likes the allweather and rated 72 he can run when he's ready without the racing calendar restraints that affect some horses like....

...Ladino
=========

A minor short term injury after Huntingdon last October meant he missed the end of year sales. As he likes fast ground there was no rush back so he did end up with the winter off, he's now back in training. Herein lies the problem. He's a very good hurdler winning off of 119 last June he's now 122 and he also needs 3 miles + and although he jumps fences he's not overly keen on them. I think there are only 3 possible races for him between May and September. Not even a seller or claimer so he'll have to be aimed at September for 1 race.

I was brought up not to put all my eggs in one basket, but come on that's taking the proverbial. Will race planners give us a little help here? It just seems a ridiculous state of affairs when racing is so keen so eliminate perceived 'bad' horses that can virtually run every week a good horse is forced into a corner with virtually no where to go. The natural progression is fences, but Ladino is far from being the only hurdler in training that prefers hurdling and is weighed down with a high mark. We are though, at where we're are and have to deal with it as best we can. If he has to be sold to go pointing and he'll do that all day long then so be it.

"Dale" soon to be named Blazing Bolte
======================================

Doing well. She's a very workmanlike filly and as idle as her mother, but she gets on with her work and gets into her grub and is now nearly a lead horse schooling all without turning a hair. I hope we can get a run in before turning away for 6 weeks to consolidate all she learned over the last few months. I do really like her and she should be a capable race horse.

"Paula" soon to be named Saharah Sun
=====================================

She was doing as well as Dale and also getting her jumping together. She's a taller, rangier filly than Dale and there is more horse to mature for want of a better way of putting it. She has been getting tired and indicating that she's finding things a bit tough. She is a lovely filly and there is no gain in keeping her in training at the time being, so the decision has been made to give her a rest and let her body catch up with it's self.

Appointment
===========

She is now back in training after her injury at Fontwell. She could have come back in far sooner in the scheme of things, but as she likes soft ground and is only 4 we decided that 6 months in the paddock to get over everything more than fully, then again give her plenty of time to get fully fit and she will be already to go when the ground is right for her.

Two horses ex Mick Channon's for sale!

***** NEW ******

There are 2 horses coming at the end of the week from Mick Channon's yard. They are both 3 year olds to go juvenille hurdling this summer with the aim of adding to our rather impressive record with ex Channon horses. Both will soon be offered for sale. Further details to follow.

Please contact me at anytime should you be interested in finding out about our two new potential stable stars!
